Neighborhood Tours

Most visitors to Washington DC see the Mall and leave thinking they have seen the city. They have seen the monuments. The city is something else entirely.

Georgetown’s cobblestone streets and 300 years of history. Dupont Circle’s embassies and Gilded Age mansions. Capitol Hill’s townhouses and neighborhood bars. U Street’s jazz clubs and civil rights legacy. Old Town Alexandria’s waterfront and colonial past. Every neighborhood in Washington DC and across the river in Alexandria has its own story, its own character, and its own reasons to spend an afternoon exploring it with someone who knows it well.

We offer neighborhood tours across the entire DC area as public group tours and as fully private experiences. If you want to go beyond the Mall, this is where to start.

Every neighborhood has a story

DC’s neighborhoods were each shaped by different waves of history: the colonial era, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, the civil rights movement, the Cold War. Our guides know those stories and tell them through the buildings, streets, and places that are still there today.

The insider knowledge you can’t find online

Our guides live and work in this city. They know which house belonged to which president before the White House. They know the restaurant that has been there since the 1950s and why it matters. They know the alley, the hidden staircase, and the view most visitors walk right past. That local knowledge is what makes a local tour worth taking.

Public tours and private options for every group

Our scheduled public neighborhood tours are a great way to explore with a small group. If you want a fully private experience with your own guide, your own pace, your own focus, we offer private neighborhood tours across every area we cover. Contact us to build something around your interests.

Which Neighborhood Is Right for You?

Georgetown

Older than DC itself and one of the most architecturally rich neighborhoods in the country. History, gossip, cobblestone streets, and the homes of presidents, spies, and Founding Fathers. We also offer a ghost tour of Georgetown for those who want the darker side of the same streets.

Embassy Row and Dupont Circle

Millionaires Row, foreign embassies, Gilded Age mansions, and enough political intrigue to fill several books. One of DC’s most undervisited and underappreciated areas and one of our most popular tours.

Capitol Hill

Beyond the Capitol Building itself, Capitol Hill is one of DC’s most livable and historically layered neighborhoods. We offer a history and architecture focusing on this historic neighborhood beyond the federal buildings.

U Street and Shaw

Once known as Black Broadway, U Street was the cultural heart of Black Washington DC for decades — the neighborhood where Duke Ellington was born, where jazz filled the theaters, and where the civil rights movement found some of its most powerful local voices.

Old Town Alexandria

Just across the river from DC, Old Town Alexandria is one of the best-preserved colonial port towns in America. Cobblestone streets, George Washington’s church, a significant enslaved people history, and waterfront views that have barely changed in 250 years.

Don’t see your neighborhood?

We offer tours across every DC neighborhood — including many that are not yet listed as public tours. If you have a specific area in mind that you don’t see above, contact us about a private tour. After nearly two decades in this city there is very little we have not covered.

All of our neighborhood tours are available as fully private experiences — your own guide, your own schedule, your own pace, and a route built around what you actually want to see. Perfect for families, visiting groups, anniversary trips, or anyone who wants a more personal experience of the city.

We can also build completely custom neighborhood tours for areas we do not currently offer as public departures. If you have a specific neighborhood, theme, or interest in mind, tell us and we will put something together.

The neighborhoods are where Washington DC actually lives. Browse the tours above, pick the one that interests you most, and reserve your spot. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before every tour.
